Zonal Offices

There are four zonal offices in the Motor Vehicle Department, each headed by a Deputy Transport Commissioner. South Zone is located at Thiruvananthapuram. It comprises of the Regional Transport Offices, Thiruvananthapuram, Attingal, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Nationalised Sector. The Central Zone-II is located at Ernakulam and it comprises of the Regional Transport Offices, Ernakulam, Muvattupuzha, Kottayam and Idukki. The Central Zone–I is located at Thrissur and it comprises of the Regional Transport Offices, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. The North Zone is located at Kozhikkod and it comprises of the Regional Transport Offices, Kozhikkod, Vadakara, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Regional transport Authorities

Our state has 17 Regional Transport Authorities constituted at each district under Section 68 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 with the District Collector as Chairman, respective Superintendent of Police and Deputy Transport Commissioner as members and the respective Regional Transport Officer as Secretary and Executive Officer. These Regional Transport Authorities exercise and discharge the powers and functions conferred on them under the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act and Rules made thereunder, which mainly relate to the control of transport by way of grant of permits.

Sub Regional Transport Offices

With a view to decentralise administration, Sub Regional Transport Offices headed by Joint Regional Transport Officers have been created. Work pertaining to licensing, registration, permits and taxation is attended at these offices. So far, 42 Sub Regional Transport offices have been established in the State.
